Despite the prevalence of broadband Internet connectivity, dial-up modems still play a crucial role in most medium to large organisations. With the increasing computerisation of infrastructure devices (network switches, HVAC, power management...) modems provide the means for cost-effective, out-of-band remote management. Although these devices are critical to maintaining business continuity, they are often overlooked from a security perspective.

Xiscan is a telephony scanning suite that can be used to scan all of an organisation's telephone lines to locate all forms of dial-in access (modem and ISDN). Xiscan stores its data in and logs its results to a database, with support for Microsoft Access, SQL Server, MySQL & Oracle. The application is highly scalable in terms of dataset size (from a few hundred to multi-million record databases) and number of concurrent modems supported (20+). Scans can be run locally or remotely across multiple time zones. Sophisticated call analysis functionality extends Xiscan's capability into inventory management (fax and data line detection), and telephony capacity planning (identification of excess capacity).
